OFF-WHITE celebrates the artist Marcel Duchamp with a special hoodie
Dedicating work in porcelain known as Fountain
April 11th, 2017
Virgil Abloh celebrates Marcel Duchamp and the 100th anniversary of his famous porcelain urinal, also known as Fontana with a hoodie.
A street piece pays homage to an iconic sculpture, although its debut in the art world has been anything but lucky. The work, presented by Duchamp under the pseudonym “R. Mutt.” to the Society of Independent Artists (of which himself was a member), was rejected because it was deemed devoid of artistic value. Few people at the time understood the opportunity to explore how the everyday object, decontextualized, could be art. Only decades later, Duchamp was recognized as one of the artists who revolutionized the vanguard and expanded the boundaries of conceptual art.
The garment made from OFF-WHITE and appeared in a preview on Instagram is black and decorated in front with white writing “R. Mutt 1917″, the same insignia that appears on the sculpture, and on the back with the words “Off-White™ c/o R.MUTT.”.
