Schools have been among the first institutions to adapt to the new measures of quarantine. How did your school react to the state of emergency? In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of online classes?
I'm honestly not a big fan of online classes. I love my university and I love the working atmosphere, and not being able to be in contact with my classmates and professors is in my opinion not only a sad but also a very limiting situation. The online lessons work quite well for some theoretical courses where the lesson is set up like the classic "frontal" lessons, but with the labs it's a disaster. For a student of fashion is very important the exchange and creation of garments and accessories, which means physical objects, you feel the need to show them directly, touching the fabric, showing the whole garment, wearing it and moving it in order to feel their full essence.Anyway, our teachers are very good and we are able to work on our projects quite easily, even if deep down we feel that there is something missing in the teaching.
The Fashion and Design Industries have been aggressively afflicted by the state of quarantine and social distancing. As a consumer, but also as a future insider of those systems, what do you think the worst consequences of this crisis will be?
Well, we all know that it is not as easy as it seems to find one's dream job in the field in which we "fashion students" operate. I'm afraid that, as for many other companies in different sectors, the workforce costs will be very significant, thus reducing the number of places available. Moreover, since fashion is not considered a primary asset, there will be a big drop in the number of purchases and the industry will enter a crisis. In Italy as well as in other countries. In addition, even the travel between the various countries will suffer great limitations, making it very difficult to find a possible job outside Italy. But I don't want to be so pessimistic ... I really hope for a recovery.
Your work is built on creativity. While we’re all in quarantine, what is your solution to keep on being creative? Where do you find your inspiration in this moment?
The best way to be creative doesn't exist. It depends on the period and the individual person. I think it is stimulating to get in touch with people, to travel and discover new cultures and new places. During quarantine, I took refuge in books, movies, TV series, reading articles and watching everything... at the end of the day, the internet is such a wonderfully vast world...
