Schools have been among the first institutions to adapt to the new measures of quarantine. What are the pros and cons of online classes?
Online classes from home make you loose the enthusiasm for the coffee breaks. When you are at home, there is no break. If you want, you can go on working and studying and never stops, day and night. You don't have to take the car, bus, train, you don't have to move or to find any excuse for being late, except for when your wi-fi gives you up. IED organized a good solution to study and work from home, giving many of the fundamental tools to follow your classes. First of all, the effort made by all the staff and teachers, thanks to whom we are able to organize our work even if we are distant.
The Fashion and Design Industries have been aggressively afflicted by the COVID-19 emergency. As a consumer, but also as a future insider of those systems, what will be the worst consequences of this crisis?
I would say that the most afflicted industries are the ones related to arts. This happens because many people think that art, fashion and design are not primary needs: you can live without an expensive clothes, without exhibitions and chairs, but you can't live without water or food. At the same time, though, you can't live without a job. So, everything that is not "necessary", actually it can be. For example: Prada, Armani and Fendi started to produce face masks, so they become necessary, giving their best help in a moment when we all needed it. Of course, we could not say that about galleries and museums; we know that they live - or survive - because of their public, a public that today is missing. So, the solution is still far. That us why the public Institutions should intervene, trying to save what is saving our history and culture. There is no worst damage than to loose the memory of what was and has been.
Your work is built on creativity. Where do you find your inspiration in this moment?
Creativity is a way of living. I say so, because from my perspective creativity is always central. It is because of creativity that, in the difficult times we are living, I can feel reality from a higher, different point of view. Let me explain: this state of isolation that we lived in the past two months, led me to watch the world from my window. From that distant visual, my imagination took flight, elaborated new works, hints, reflections that most of the time I forget to take notes of in my daily, frenetic life. Notes: in these two months I wrote everything here and there. I wrote, and I read. I saved so many Notes on my iPhone, I saved many art works, articles, lectures, pictures, everything that made me think about what I'm writing right now: “isolation”, “social distance”, “change”. So, I think that this pandemic, for how much it was devastating, represents a new chapter of out history, a new condition that is taking us to live differently. And for anyone who works on arts, like me, there is nothing more inspirational than a new story to tell.
