Schools have been among the first institutions to adapt to the new measures of quarantine. What are the pros and cons of online classes?
My school, IED Roma, soon chose the modality of online classes via virtual platform. In my opinion, the result of this way of teaching is variable, because any response is filtered by a screen that becomes a sort of window, crossing different realities each one with autonomous characteristics, all of them related to each other. Despite that, some classes really interested me as much as the "real" ones. Students must be much more focused and also the teacher's attitude must commit much more than in real life to engage students: being at home could be really distracting because of a low wi-fi, noises, too much comfortable sofas, but on the other hand they could be also helpful. For these reasons, I hope that in exceptional situations this new opportunity could be a valid alternative. I'm missing the direct experience, the exchange of ideas, the confrontation and the possibility to look into each other's eyes, but they are not completely gone: we just jave to live them, for now, through new places and virtual times.
The Fashion and Design Industries have been aggressively afflicted by the COVID-19 emergency. As a consumer, but also as a future insider of those systems, what will be the worst consequences of this crisis?
Among all the industries, for sure fashion and design will be very afflicted. Behind these industries, in fact, there are many realities and humans that live by creativity. For not being part of the primary goods, the world of design will be de-powered both in the production and in the demand, but I also think that it will be called to re-invent itself, to understand what are going to be its new needs in a world that is completely new. In the architectural field, I think that we will need to focus on the less populated places and balance the population density to the Italian territory. Small villages, towns, countrysides could be a very important resource for our economy. In big cities, it will be fundamental the role of interior designers: in this time more than ever, we realize that an exterior place "inside" of your home can be vital. After this historical moment, I think that our attention should focus to this trend.
Your work is built on creativity. Where do you find your inspiration in this moment?
My inspiration has not changed, it just adapted. Despite the direct experience has to me a role of primary importance both for my personal and professional growth, as I love confrontations and to listen to different realities that surround me, I can't say that there is a lack of pictures and news to inspire me. Indeed, in this moment more than ever we can feel really stimulated. That is why I spontaneously gave more importance to the virtual world, as well to inner thinking, to silence, to observation. I have always photographed shapes and colors from reality that inspire me, so at first I was discouraged by the idea of living always between the same four walls. I photographed less, but I took more time to look at things. I think about that one morning when it rained, when grey and green were mixed in different layers; I think about how much have changed the ray of lights on the white walls since March; I realized that some birds sing at noon, some others at sunset; I changed my perception of domestic places. Observation leads to reflection: reflection leads to a much more free approach to production, and we don't even notice that. For sure, I watched more movies than I used to, trying to see everything I wanted to, and I often organized some collective virtual screenings to talk about our impressions. I thought I would have read much more, but I did as the usual. And that brings me to the solution: we have to accept this time to find new hints, to do all the things we wanted to, and not to feel any pressure about what we have to do or produce.
