Schools have been among the first institutions to adapt to the new measures of quarantine. What are the pros and cons of online classes?
The first impact was hard for everybody. I had already finished my classes, but I had to finish my thesis and some exams in June. At the very beginning, it was difficult to accept that I had to postpone a moment that I have been waiting for so long, but me and my friends understood that the only solution was to stay unite. IED has been always by our side and tried to make everything easier, with online meetings and WhatsApp groups to be always in touch. Furthermore, they were prompt in giving us access and licenses that were functional for our exams, so that we could use them on our computers at home. All these solutions have been a valid alternative. Certainly, there is not the same synergy that you always have in a group. We are missing the physical contact, but also empathy. Talking to an object, you become cold: but it is up to us to change this. Anyway, there still are a lot of positive facets: I have friends that spent hours on buses and trains to come to school, while technology shortens the distance and gives you more time to study and to focus on yourself. It allows you to never miss a class, but most of all it is very hard to be late on class when they are in your own bedroom.
The Fashion and Design Industries have been aggressively afflicted by the COVID-19 emergency. As a consumer, but also as a future insider of those systems, what will be the worst consequences of this crisis?
As a future professional of CG Animation, so in cinema and television, I am seeing the breakdown of these industries. You can't shot a movie anymore, nor you can go to see a movie. All the sets are closed, and many productions have been stopped. The worst consequence is that it will be very hard to find new jobs in this crisis, but most of all it will be hard to start again while you have to face millions in debts.
Your work is built on creativity. Where do you find your inspiration in this moment?
Hints are always the same. Staying at home does not limitate your creativity. Of course it can slow it down, but doesn't stop it. We are born in the digital era, you can find inspiration even looking at Pinterest. Everyday there are billions of creatives that post online their projects and ideas. Doing a creative job, I am lucky because I got to spend the lockdown with my friends who work in design and music. We find creativity inside of us, but most of all everyday we confront with each other about our works, new ideas and the possibility of making something together.
How to keep being creative on our own? I find out the pleasure of relax, of reading books I almost forgot, and even with plants that are not precisely my strength. You can find a small piece of you in the small gestures, in the infinite world of ideas that you can find on Internet, you, even when you feel that you have lost the path. The solution doesn't really exist, it depends on who you are and what you are feeling. Only if you are willing to let yourself go, become zero and isolate, you can understand what you really need.
