Schools have been among the first institutions to adapt to the new measures of quarantine. What are the pros and cons of online classes?
IED immediately reacted to allow the regular course of our classes, organizing online live-lessons and reviews of our projects on Skype. Teachers changed their programs to adapt to this new way of teaching; they used a lot of slides, they created specific videos tu support us in our study. Everything went under a big change, considering that we used to spend a lot of our time in the lab and with practical activities.
It is not easy to get used to this new "mood": on one side, I appreciated the comfort of not having to move from my home and the opportunity to organize my time way better than I did before; on the other hand, I miss every human interaction and relationship, because it means that I can't have a confrontation with my schoolmates. To not attend classes means that I can't use all the tools and platforms I was offered by IED, and that makes even more difficult any group work and the exchange of different ideas and opinions.
The Fashion and Design Industries have been aggressively afflicted by the COVID-19 emergency. As a consumer, but also as a future insider of those systems, what will be the worst consequences of this crisis?
The fashion industry is suffering so much from this period, as a mirror of the economical situation that we re currently living on a global scale. The stop of all the productions led and will still lead to the loss of many work places and the closure of many shops, especially when it comes to fast fashion and little brands that will not have enough resources to face the crisis. Many industries will have to face another problem: the "leftovers" of their production, that soon will be out of season.
I think that this emergency will force us to re-think many facets of the fashion system: for example its timing, because it is clear that there is going to be a different scheduling of the next releases. Maybe all of this will lead us to a re-evaluation of quality, to choose artisanal excellence and sustainable productions, will make us think about what is useful and necessary and will give back value to creativity. It is going to be us, every young people, who will have to adapt and find our places in the world of design.
Your work is built on creativity. Where do you find your inspiration in this moment?
In this moment, it is important to not stay really isolated, but to keep on being updated. I used my time to find new solutions to my projects, preparing for future jobs, taking hints from magazines, web, books, but also traveling with my mind since it is impossibile to do it with my body.
