It opens tonight inside the Spazio Maria Calderara in Milan “ANDY WARHOL Illustrations for Fashion Magazines, 1951-1963”, exhibition dedicated to the relationship between the American artist and the glossy world of fashion illustration.
Even if this aspect of his career is among the less known, Warhol produced sophisticated drawings for the main fashion magazines of the time, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Mademoiselle, Glamour, American Girl, Esquire and Seventeen. Publications very different from each other for editorial line and target, through which Warhol was able to demonstrate his versatility, producing contents with a unique style according to the budget and the art director.
The curators of the exhibition – Paola Varello and Giorgio Maffei – have divided the itinerary in different themes, with a focus on the artist and his reference public. During his career Warhol worked for more than 400 issues of various magazines, activity which represents the privileged field of his experimentations, as well as the main source of his income at the time and of the friendships which enabled him to consolidate his fame as an artist.
