The pioneer of colors
Sept. 15th - Oct. 31st, London
September 16th, 2015
In the wake of some American pioneers of colour photography like Joel Meyerowitz and William Eggleston, Harry Gruyaert records the subtle chromatic vibrations of the banks of the East and the West, through an highly pictorial contruction, where light floods the space.
Harry Gruyaert was born in Antwerp in 1941. After studying from 1960 to 1963 at the School of Film and Television in Brussels, Harry began his career as a freelance in Paris in the fashion and advertising field, working at the same time as a director of photography for the Flemish television. This experience is decisive in bringing the young Gruyaert structural importance of light within a composition.
Trips to India, in 1976, and Egypt, in 1987, followed. Far from the exotic stereotypes, Gruyaert's vision leads the viewer to mysterious atmospheres, fascinating and sometimes impenetrable.
He will be on display at Magnum Photos in London from September 15th to October 31st.
