A ring above the Grand Central Station of NY

Insieme a Foster + Partners e WXY Architecture + Urbano Design, Skidmore, Owings & Merril è uno dei tre studi di architettura invitati dalla Municipal Art Society a presentare idee per il concorso Grand Central, che consiste nella proposta di "rezoning" da parte del New York City Department of City Planning, nell’area circostante il Grand Central, in cui non solo si propone di aumentare la densità di persone confluenti nella stazione, ma si propone anche di migliorare le infrastrutture della zona, quali nuovi punti di accesso alle piattaforme della metropolitana e una nuova isola pedonale su Vanderbilt Avenue. Tra le soluzioni proposte da SOM , oltre ad uno sviluppo verticale della struttura (diviso poi in torri), c'è la proposta futuristica di un "anello sospeso" in particolare tra due fabbricati affiancati al vecchio edificio della stazione, in cui la gente può circolare guardandosi attorno a 360 gradi, assaggiando un'esperienza dal brivido cinematografico, del calibro di Star Wars!

Together to Foster + Partners and WXY Architecture + Urban Design, Skidmore, Owings & Merril is one of three studies of architecture invited from the Municipal Art Society to show ideas for the Big Central competition, that consists in the proposal of "rezoning" aside of the New York City Department of City Planning, in the neighboring area of the Big Central, in which is not only proposed to increase the density of people in the station, but It is proposed also to improve the infrastructures of the zone, as new points of access to the platforms of the subway and a new pedestrian zone on Vanderbilt Avenue.  Between the solutions proposals from SOM, beyond to a vertical development of the structure (divided  in towers), there is the futuristic proposal of a " suspended ring" ,in particular  between two buildings supported to the old building of the station, in which the people can move around  looking  outside at 360°, tasting an experience from the film shudder, of the caliber of Star Wars!
